Shephaven German Shepherds

My German Shepherds are raised as our pets, around children and cats, happy, healthy and show wonderful social skills.
My breeding dogs go thru Vet Checks including hip and elbow x rays which are read and scored by the German Shepherd Dog Council of Australia Hip Dysplasia (HD) and Elbow Dysplasia (ED) Control Schemes. The dog must pass this scheme to be breed from this is a very important factor in the health of our breed.I Never breed from a fail no matter what.  For more information on the hip and elbow scheme

Our goal for each breeding is to improve the breed. When we decide to do a breeding many factors are taken into consideration including structure, trainability, temperament, and health issues.
We must first honestly evaluate the bitch as to her strengths and weaknesses. We consider what positive traits she has to offer and what traits need to be improved upon. Our goal is to select a stud dog who will hopefully improve upon her weaknesses.

Puppies are exposed to touch socialization  and sound socialization. These are both critical neurological developments and this systematic stimulation helps development. Depending on weather, puppies start having brief periods outdoors around 3 weeks of age. We do encourage “house training” by letting puppies out of their puppy pen onto the grass to take care of elimination. This is done in conjunction with meals.

Puppies are given an array of toys with different textures and sounds including rock cans, plastic bottles filled with stones squeaky and tug toys. As the puppies grow they are exposed to different stimuli, including being encouraged to “come” by coming to the food bowl with a command come. Puppies who will be shipped begin crate training  so they will be familiar and comfortable with a crate before being shipped.

Puppies are nuero stimulated from day 3 to day 16.
Early Neural Stimulation is a technique based on years of research that was first used by the U.S. Military in their canine program in an effort to improve the performance of their dogs used for military purposes. This program later became known to the public as the “Super Dog” program. This research showed that dogs exposed to specific early neurological stimulation exercises were able to handle stress better and were actually more resistant to certain forms of cancer and infectious diseases. Breeders also find that these pups are less prone to an over-reaction to stimuli, (biting out of fear), tend to be much more social, and adapt to change more easily.
In addition to the normal daily handling and care we give our puppies, we also follow the guidelines set forth for this technique of Early Neural Stimulation. We feel this is another great way to give your puppy the best start that we can.
